PLANNING YOUR ADVENTURE?HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Is it safe to drive/rent a 4×4 in South Africa and neighbouring countries?
Absolutely. Our vehicles and trips are designed with safety as the top priority. With over 25 years of overland experience and more than 250,000 km driven across Africa, we understand the terrain, the risks, and how to mitigate them. We use expedition-ready vehicles, comprehensive insurance covering 14 African countries, and 24/7 tracking, so you can explore with confidence.
What happens if there is a breakdown or accident while we’re on the road?
You’re covered. Our all-inclusive insurance and support system mean that breakdowns, mechanical failure or unforeseen incidents are handled. From vehicle recovery to medical evacuation if needed, you’ll have a dedicated team backing you. We’ll handle logistics while you focus on the adventure.
What does “fully-equipped” mean? What gear is included with the 4×4?
When we say fully equipped, we mean it, you just need to bring your clothing and sense of adventure. Every Voetspore 4×4 comes ready for the road, stocked with everything from dish soap to bedding. Each vehicle includes a rooftop tent with full bedding, a dual-battery system with power outlets, a fridge and freezer, and a complete kitchen kit with cutlery, crockery, pots, pans, and cleaning supplies. You’ll also have a table, camp chairs, recovery gear, and a Garmin GPS pre-loaded with our tried-and-tested routes. It’s a true turnkey overlanding setup, no hidden extras, no surprises, just everything you need for a safe and comfortable African adventure.
What’s the minimum rental period and how is a “day” calculated?
For Voetspore Rentals the minimum booking period is 5 days. A “day” begins on your pickup date (that counts as Day 1), and ends on your drop-off day. Pickup and drop-off days are inclusive in your total rental count. So if you pick up on 1 May and drop off on 5 May, you are on a 5-day rental.
What about vehicle delivery to locations like Cape Town or Hoedspruit?
We’re based in Pretoria, which allows us to support most Southern African overland routes efficiently. If you require delivery of the vehicle to or from Cape Town, Hoedspruit or other locations, we can arrange this, but it will come with a surcharge to cover logistics and transport.
I’m an international traveller, what licences and documents do I need?
You’ll need a valid passport (with at least six months’ validity remaining) for travel within South Africa and across borders. You’ll also you need a valid driver’s licence from your home country, plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) if your licence isn’t in English. We’ll brief you on specific border-entry paperwork depending on your route. With Voetspore, we handle vehicle permits, insurance, and cross-border documentation, so you can arrive and drive away with confidence.
What about safety concerns in South Africa (crime, regions, driving at night)?
We take that concern seriously. We advise against unknown urban driving at night, particularly in unfamiliar areas. Our route plans favour safe, well-maintained roads and scheduled stops. Our vehicles are designed for remote travel, but we also guide you on best practices, such as avoiding night driving, staying alert, and sticking to vetted routes. With Voetspore, you’re not alone on the road; you’re backed by 25 years of experience.
How do I select the right vehicle for my trip?
Your choice depends on your group size, route, and comfort level. If you’re going deep into remote regions, crossing sand, or staying in campsites far from amenities, a robust 4×4 (e.g., Land Cruiser) is ideal. If your route is more moderate and tar- and gravel-roads dominate, something lighter (like a Jimny) may suffice. We’ll help you choose based on terrain, number of passengers, and luggage volume, so you get the best vehicle for your adventure.
